A developer of online games was featured in Startup Journal, part of the Wall Street Journal Online.
On-the-Side Online Game Becomes a Full-Time Biz
Highlights:
Mr. Ferrier created War of Conquest, an online multiplayer strategy game. Each player is assigned a country, with the goal of developing it, collecting resources and conquering other lands
Once the game went online, Mr. Ferrier says, he realized that to generate income, he'd have to promote it. Knowing that people often find online games through Web directories, he created a Web site, play-free-online-games.com, cataloging dozens of free online multiplayer games, including his own.
The game allowed him to stop free-lancing in 2003. His earnings vary greatly, depending on the time of year. Mr. Ferrier says the range is typically about $4,000 to $10,000 a month. Not surprisingly, he says, his best months tend to coincide with school breaks.
Creating additional sites to help promote your site is a great strategy. I started doing that back in 1997 when I created solitairegames.com (although now, another site freecell.org is more successful).
